Auto Insurance: Collision Coverage / Physical Damage

Collision Coverage

Also known as the other potion of the Physical Damage coverage on your auto. Collision works in conjunction with Comprehensive Coverage to fill in the need to cover your vehicle in the event you or someone you allow to drive your car causes it to be damaged. Or otherwise referred to as an At-Fault Accident. Some examples:

At-Fault:

  • Collision with another vehicle (Your fault)
  • Rolling the vehicle - single car accident
  • Collision with a structure, building, tree

This coverage is going to be one of the more expensive ones on your policy. Mainly because Collision damage when a claim is made on it, is generally a much higher amount than the average Comprehensive Claim. Collision Claims will adversely affect your insurance rates for 3-5 years. Too many Collision incidents and you may be non-renewed at the end of your policy term.

Insurance Points and Driving History

Each At-Fault incident on your CLUE report will count against you in the form of Insurance Points. Insurance points and Motor Vehicle Driving Record points are different things. Sometimes two incidents occuring simultaneously will count as only one on your Insurance Point System or as only one on your Driving Record. For instance, two similar tickets issued for the same accident like a Failure to Control Vehicle or a Speeding ticket will be lumped in as just an "At-Fault Accident" for insurance purposes. However when you go before the judge, you have two tickets to take care of but nothing else for the accident. However, some things will not be overlooked such as the case with a DUI and a resulting Accident. You will be charged points for the DUI on your insurance in addition to the Accident. Generally major violations like 20+mph speeding, reckless driving, DUI etc will always be charged regardless of if an accident has already been assessed for the incident.

If you have a less than flawless driving history, you have more reason to check for new insurance rates with other companies. Some Insurance Companies will be more favorable with an accident than they would with a DUI or the other direction. Each company that accepts higher risk drivers has a specialty on specifically what type of driver they look for. One company might have the stand that a driver with a DUI often learns his lesson and never has a problem again however a person that has an accident and speeds is going to continue to do so. Even worse is each company can change its mind every year when they update their rates!

GetCoveredUSA.com Insurance Tip: Collision Claims are the most costly for your insurance history. Even one can bring very severe rate increases for the next 36 months and may still affect your rate for up to 60 months total. Make sure you consult your insurance agent on how to handle claims where you are At-Fault.
